Transpersonal Councelling

One of the first steps after receiving your diagnosis is usually to reach out to someone who will listen really well to your concerns and what you are going through. This is guiding most people with cancer to councelling. Often  people thing that they must be in great distress before they engage in a councelling relationship or there must be something wrong with them if they use the service of councelling. This is far from true.

There are many councelling styles and models to chose from. The holistic model I'm using in both one - to - one and group therapy is called transpersonal.

I will work with you together in order to develop a treatment protocol that is right for you. I believe that is important for you to realize that both your progress and success will have much more to do with you – with your insights, your wisdom, your understanding that you might have imagined.

In fact your decisions are what is important, my job as a therapist is to assist you in looking at your option. However, I do not or will not make decisions for you. It is my great hope that when you leave me you will be better equipped for the road of life than when you came to see me for support. I may also have you do specific exercises (homework) between the sessions. This would be done to maximize the healing changes in your life.

 What is Transpersonal Therapy

Transpersonal councelling seeks to help the individual to explore her or his needs from a whole person perspective. Serious illness challenges all part of our being. The basis for transpersonal therapy says that all of life is made of our physical body, our thoughts, our feelings, our emotions, our spirit, our relationships and the environment in which we live.

Transpersonal councelling provides people in crises with an alternative to symptom suppression. It helps them to creatively adapt to their crisis, using the experience to grow and truly heal. The experience is transformed into a breakthrough rather than breakdown. Transpersonal counselling emphasises personal empowerment and will help you to find out what is right about your life. In a transpersonal councelling session you will be given help to the message of your health crisis and how you can grow positively from the experience, rather then just learning to accepting what is happening.

Transpersonal therapy is the therapy of integration. A transpersonal therapist can only walk with you as far as they have walked on their own transpersonal journey. 

The basis for transpersonal therapy.

Transpersonal view is that life is about trying to bring a balance with all four parts, the physical, emotional , mental and spiritual one, so that no part rules over the others - all work together for a balanced life to come into being.

In one sense this will be a life - long journey; in another sense we are always trying to get into balance so that one part of our lives does not take over the other parts.

When one part takes over, or when one or more parts are neglected, then it is said that we are out of balance. We can then be in a state of ill health in any of the areas.

Example: The Bowl of water.
Imagine a bowl of water. Now, imagine the water is divided into 4 parts. Now imagine trying to drop a marble into one part without the other parts being affected. Even if you had actually placed dividers in the bowl of water, there would still be an affect on the other parts - just not as pronounced.

The Transpersonal Councellor.

Helps the person to unravel areas of life, establish priorities, and offers support. In other words, the transpersonal therapist looks at the whole of the person/of life and not just one area.

The transpersonal therapist also attempts to empower you - to walk with you as you walk the path that’s healthy for you. NO ONE can walk for you but a good therapist is walking with you as the two of you develop awareness of your path. This path is one that is your path - not what someone else’s thinks should be your path.

Transpersonal therapy is a cooperative path. This means that you will be actively participating in the therapy to the extent that you are able to do so. The focus is on you.
The transpersonal councelling approach can include visualization, guided imagery, art work, writing and keeping a journal, affirmations, to help you to develop and strengthen a positive mindset for your healing.

A transpersonal councellor will help you

  • To reframe the crisis as an opportunity for healing and    growth.
  • May help you change from being passive in your life to            taking an active role in your healing and in creating your    ideal lifestyle.
  • May help you look at the benefits you may be gaining from your illness and helping you learn how to get the benefits without having to be ill.

It takes account of the client’s past experiences, but also looks to the future and what is likely to unfold for them, the challenges they may face and the qualities that need to emerge in them to meet those challenges. Its basic belief is that whatever the hardships of human experience, the core essence, or soul, remains undamaged.


The people who come to me are usually very concerned about their privacy and confidentiality. They are typically working on highly personal, often painful and difficult issues. They need to trust that what they say and share in sessions will remain in the session. They want to know that nobody outside our therapy space will know their personal information. I can provide that guarantee.
