Chapter 7

Toolkit for Healing

We have all built up a toolbox of unique tools to help us navigate through life, we just need to use them.
Every crafts-person has a toolbox full of tools and a number of techniques to help them bring inspiration into form. In the same way, throughout our lives, we have discovered our own life tools and techniques - the ways and means that have helped us create our lives up to this point. Sometimes we forget about the tools and skills we’ve acquired, and we wonder why we aren’t moving forward. At times like these, it might just be a matter of remembering what we already know, and rediscovering the tools we already have at our disposal.

In the process of becoming who we are and creating our lives, we have all gone through the experience of being inspired to do something and then finding the tools we needed to do it. If we look back, we may be able to remember that we used, for example, the tool of writing every day in order to clarify our intentions. We may also have used the tools of ritual, meditation, or visualization to make something happen. In addition, we may have been fueled by a new idea about how the universe works, which is what gave us the inspiration to use these tools.

In order for ideas to be powerful, they must be imbued with the energy of our engagement with them, and in order for tools to be effective they must be put to use. This sounds obvious, but often we fall into the habit of thinking we are engaging with ideas and using tools by virtue of the fact that we are reading about them, or listening to other people talk about them. In truth, using our tools is a very personal action, one we must take on behalf of ourselves. Like artists, we are each unique and no two of us will receive the same inspiration, nor will we bring it into form in the same two ways. To discover the truth of our own vision, we must take action by remembering our tools and putting them to use.  Madisyn Taylor

"Our lives are built from what we put in our mouth and what we put in our mind. Both are important - Feeding our mouth and feeding our mind. "

  • Be Actively Involve in Your Healing! Do the BEST you can do to heal yourself.

Getting involved in your Healing is one of the most powerful tools and helps you to stay in control of life and treatment.

The best thing you can do to strengthen the will to live is to involve yourself as an active participant in healing your illness. When patients approach their disease in this way, they are no longer helpless victims. Instead, they become active partners with their  health creation and medical support team for improvement, remission or cure.

  • Learn to put yourself at the top of the list of people to look after.

If you look after yourself properly, you will be in a much better shape to care for others. When you are able to care for yourself you will be less needy and demanding. As a result of this you will have a healthier relationship with your friends and family.

  • Get to know your needs well.

Listen to your body's need for food, sleep, comfort, emotional and spiritual need.

  • Avoid and Remove immediately all stress and over - activities out of your life.

Stress can be a silent killer. Be absolute ruthless to eliminate as many draining commitments as you can. Stress and worry accomplish nothing. They are actually allies of illness and disease. So you must do whatever it takes to remove stress from your life and make your mental attitude your ally. Avoid and remove all external stress. Any external stress will feed cancer at the cellular level by causing a depletion of adrenaline.  ALL stress should be avoided, without exception. Many late stage cancer survivors have all made considerable CHANGE in their life's. This means they have either changed jobs or finished working altogether, ended relationships or marriages that are stressful or depressing, moved house, moved to a peaceful location etc, all for the purpose of removing ALL stress from their lives.

  • Equally important, if not more so, is addressing any emotional issues from the present or the past which may be contributing to stress and preventing the body from optimal healing - may even have contributed to your development of cancer in the first place.
  • There have been many reports of cancer going into spontaneous remission after people successfully addressed emotional issues and stress. Healing emotional pain (anger, hurt, grief, hate...) is the most critical step in recovering from cancer.  It is the first step in your Cancer Healing Programme.

Choose One Word Of Your Next Year

In word of the year, you pick one word which resonates with you. One word which you would like to experience in you / your life. How you do that is not important. How will it lead to improving your life in areas you want is not important. This word pulled you because somewhere within there is something you need to experience & learn. Living a year with this word can lead you to it.
What you are asked to do is simple – every opportunity you get to be that word, to experience that word, to make that word real for you, do so. Stay with the word for the entire year and ask yourself how do I manifest this in my life? And follow through with whatever comes up. The path will lead you to places you need to visit, it will satisfy needs deep within which you didn’t know existed, it will open new areas for you which otherwise you possibly might have missed.

The beauty of taking word based approach is that you don’t know where will it lead you. Word based approach  encourages you to own the word. You own it in such a way that it enmeshes with you, it becomes part of who you are and what your personality is. It becomes you. And because you own the word, it affects all areas of your life. Sometimes in ways you didn’t foresee while choosing the word. So often we keep working on known faults and the true reason for failure or lack of growth remains hidden. So often our understanding of what’s the problem is way away from the actual one. Word based approach brings to light these hidden areas, these blind spots in your life. It provides you with opportunities to expand yourself, it challenges you to grow and reach beyond yourself in every area of your life.

Pick Your Passion Of The Year – Keeps Things Interesting

You could choose to pick passion of the month or passion of the decade … doesn’t really matter. One year works for me hence I say one year.

It doesn’t matter what you pick up as long as you are trying something new. Give yourself an opportunity to explore something, have fun with something. If you don’t like what you try, you can always pick something else. Out of 10 things you try, you might at least like one. And who knows, what you find might surprise you – you like it so much that you stick with it for lifetime.

Every time you try something new, you enrich your life with    a new experience. Every time you find something you are passionate about, you have hit a jackpot – your life will forever be rich from the joy that activity will bring in you.

           Follow A No Complain Rule

"No complaining" is tough. But guess what, it gets tougher. You don’t get to complain even in your mind. Do whatever  you have to – make fun of life, accept life, change life … but don’t complain.

The reason for this is simple, complaining doesn’t give any returns. It might give you a momentary release but it spoils your quality of life (and of those around you). You have problems, you change your attitude, you don’t get to complain.

The magic of this is that you can’t keep thinking ‘I can’t complain’ forever. The no complain rule will force you to ask yourself that what can I do make this pain/irritation go away, or what can I do make things bearable. Now that’s a constructive thought – one which you might not have if you get to complain.

I have come to a point where I ask myself what’s the point      of complaining? Nothing’s going to change. So why spoil mood? Why not simply accept what is or change what is.

I know, it kind of reminds you of The Serenity Prayer doesn’t it? It’s one of my favorite prayers –

God Grant Me The Serenity
To Accept The Things I Cannot Change;
Courage To Change The Things I Can;
And Wisdom To Know The Difference.

Does this mean that I don’t complain at all? No, of course        not. I do complain. Sometimes I don’t even realize that I am complaining. But since I don’t allow people around me to complain, they do the same for me. (I think they must secretly enjoy giving me back what I give them very much)

Meditate meditation

Meditating is one of the great things you can do for yourself, your health, and those you love. It’s a way of accessing your natural self-healing instincts. Prayer is talking - meditation is listening. It is focusing the mind in a state of relaxed awareness that, although less responsive to distractions, is more focused than usual toward things we want to pay attention to-images of healing, for example. There are many ways to practice meditation and many teachers with whom to study. The most important factor however, is to take a break from your normal routine each day for a period of time, become still, center yourself in whatever way works best for you, and listen. There is probably no better way to improve your quality of life better than meditation. Even without the aid of sound, meditation has been shown to have great beneficial affect on the health of the person who practices regularly.

Let food be your medicine. You can choose to eat to live, rather than living to eat. Scientists confirm that poor eating habits accounted for a third of all cancer.

Cancer Lifeline Recipe Cards

Celebrity chef and Cancer Nutrition Consultant Jane Sen, has specially devised a set of beautiful recipe cards with stand for the Cancer Lifeline Kit in 3 sections:

  • Clean Machine for detoxification, either following intensive treatment or as a starting point on a holistic health programme
  • Eat Right for long term healthy eating.

Detoxifying your Body

To keep your body going with full strength, regular detoxing and cleansing the body from built up toxins, like heavy metals and pesticides, as well as undigested food, fecal matter and gallstones that build up in the body by cleansing your colon and liver. A toxic and "unclean" body weakens the body’s immune system.

Toxins build up primarily in the liver – the master immune system organ. When the liver is overloaded with toxins, your immune system is weakened and you feel sicker.

It is very important to have an on-going detoxification plan to detoxify the liver, the colon, the gall bladder and the kidneys, to prevent toxins building up within your body.  Cleansing your body from the inside out also means making sure whatever you put in your body from now on is free from toxins. It is PARAMOUNT to stop smoking and to stop drinking alcohol and to change your diet to one rich in anti-cancer foods. These are foods whose compounds have been proven in studies to destroy cancer cells in the body.

Exercise

Exercise can often play an important role in helping people with cancer tolerate their treatment. Exercise provides a heightened sense of vitality that improve their energy level and overall quality of life. One of the most immediate and universal benefits of even brief periods of exercise is relief of stress and tension.

Walking in Nature, Yoga, Gardening, Cycling

Swimming, Cross - Country Skiing...

Have A Regular Routine

The times when we feel most “spacey” and vulnerable often coincide with feeling our lives are “out of control.” You may be on autopilot all day, meeting the needs of one demand after the next. Bedtime comes and you realize another day has past during which you never stopped to breathe, ground, or take care of yourself.

Setting a regular routine of self-care may help you. Allow time in the early morning, afternoon, and evening for yourself. Even if it is just 5 minutes each time, use these times wisely to breathe slow, deep breaths, meditate, and ground. Your day will take on a much different tone with this slight adjustment to your schedule. Make these self - care times part of your daily routine, and stick to it!. If you are a parent with small children, use your child’s nap time, favorite TV time, and a time when your partner can watch the children to implement these small, but extremely important self-care rituals.

The basis for transpersonal therapy says that all of life is made up of 4 general areas: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Touch one part and you affect all the other parts.

 Regain Control Over Your Cancer

Most late stage cancer survivors have a strong inner belief that they can heal their cancer and overcome it. This strong inner mental belief sends direct messages to the immune system to work harder to diminish cancer cells in the body. Those who feel cancer has taken over them, send subconscious messages to their immune system to shut down and expect defeat as they feel the battle has already been won. It is important to adopt an attitude that cancer is a physical warning symptom that is showing YOU that your emotional, mental, spiritual and physical body’s are out of balance. A warning is not meant to be a defeat. You CAN overcome cancer.

Hope and inner belief are important tools for regaining your control over your cancer.  And guided imagery can help you to regain this control. CD: Cope Positively with Symptoms and Treatment of cancer, Images for healing CD, Heal Yourself CD, Message of Hope video (Health Creation)

Have Huge Amounts of Fun and Laughter in Your Life

The use of laughter should be strongly considered. There are many instances of cancer patients who have used laughter therapy (i.e. Watched VERY funny movies/comedies everyday during their recovery) without using mainstream medicine and have fully recovered. Laughter is found to lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones, and boost immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting cells. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.
