Spirulina has been on the planet over 3 billion years. It still grows wild and abundantly around the world in very alkaline, mineral-rich, largely pollution-free, soda lakes. Spirulina is not sea bacteria. However, the fresh-water ponds and lakes spirulina favors are notably more alkaline, in the range of 8 to 11 pH, than ordinary lakes and cannot sustain any other forms of microorganisms.

This water is too salty (up to pH 11) to support fish, to use for growing terrestrial crops or for drinking. But it is perfect for growing Spirulina.

Spirulina thrives in very warm waters of 32 to 45C, and has even survived in temperatures of 60 C. Certain desert - adapted species will survive when their pond habitats evaporate in the intense sun, drying to a dormant state on rocks as hot as 70 C .

In this dormant condition, the naturally blue-green bacteria turn a frosted white and develop a sweet flavor as its 71% protein structure is transformed into polysaccharide sugars by the heat. In fact, the hotter it gets and the more the mineral salts concentrate as water evaporates the faster and more prolifically Spirulina grows!

Spirulina - The Magical Food


As we all know, some of our illnesses are caused by having insufficient nutrients in our body. These illnesses are just the symptoms to show us that we may be lacking in some nutrients. Some delicious and healthy recipes with spirulina:

Quinoa - Spirulina Bread (gluten and diary free)


1 cup quinoa
1 cup buckwheat flour (or brown rice, sorghum or other gluten free flour of choice)
2 cups of water
3/4 cup almond milk (
almond milk ) or milk substitute of choice
2 eggs
1 Tbs honey or agave
2 Tbs arrowroot or tapioca starch
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/4 tsp gluten free baking powder
2 Tbs spirulina


Soak quinoa in 2 cups of water overnight or for up to 10 hours. This will kick start the sprouting process making the seeds more protein and enzyme powered and easier to digest (more on sprouting super food sprouts)


  • Drain excess water and rinse thoroughly

  • Preheat oven to 250C degrees

  • Combine together the milk sub, eggs, agave/honey, starch of choice, sea salt and quinoa

  • Separately combine the gluten-free flour of choice, baking soda, baking powder and spirulina goodness.

  • Now mix the wet and dry together until well mixed but no need to overdue it.

  • Grease up a loaf pan, lightly dust with flour and then pour in the mix.

  • Bake for 40-50 minutes- until a toothpick comes out clean.

  • Allow to sit for 5-10 minutes before transferring from pan onto a rack to let it cool.

  • Eat up that goodness. To maintain freshness, wrap up and store in fridge or pre-slice and throw it in the freezer.

       

Raw Spirulina Energy Crunch Bars
 Gluten, diary and sugar free

A 100 calorie raw snack, high in enzymes, healthy fats, and nutrient rich spirulina.

Yield: 9 bars

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup raw pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 2 fresh dates, pitted
  • 1/2 tsp spirulina

Pulse pumpkin and sunflower seeds in food processor with “S” blade. Remove and place in a small bowl. Using same food processor bowl, blend banana and dates until smooth. Add pulsed seeds and all remaining ingredients to the bowl. Mix quickly with food processor before shaping mixture into small bars.

Dehydrator version: place bars on teflex sheets and dehydrate for 8-10hrs at 105F. You’ll know the bars are done when they’re crispy on the outside and firm on the inside.

Freezer version: place the bars on a parchment paper lined plate and stick in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm up. Bars eaten right out of the freezer work well but will become soft in 15 minutes or so.


      

Raw Spirulina Super Snacks


  • A handful of raw sunflower seeds (can use your favorite type of nut instead)
  • 4 Tbsp shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 3 Tbsp raisins
  • 1 Tbsp spirulina powder
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 squirt raw honey (anywhere between 1 tsp to 1 Tbsp; I used closer to 1 Tbsp)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
         ______________________________________________________________
  1. Pulse sunflower seeds in blender or Vita-Mix until as close to powdery as you can get them

  1. Add remaining ingredients and pulse until sticky. You may need to stop the blender and scrape down the sides a few times.

  1. Form small balls, place on a plate, then place the plate in the fridge. You can also flatten the balls to look more like cookies

  1. Let harden a bit; will still be chewy when done, but not gooey.
  2. Enjoy! Store remainder in fridge, but rest assured, they won’t last long …

Spirulina super snacks are great for kids, but if feeding to a child under the age of 1 year, just make sure to substitute agave or maple syrup for the honey .

Honey can contain botulism spores that are lethal to infants. Adults and children over one year are safe. It’s also fine for breastfeeding moms, since the spores are killed on their journey through the GI tract, never making it into mom’s breastmilk.
