It is helpful to begin with a telephone conversation at a time when you have a private environment to talk freely. This gives us a chance to hear each other's voices and to get an initial sense of whether it would be beneficial to take a further step. I will need to get a sense of whether I feel able to be helpful, and you will probably have some questions about what to expect.

If we both decide to go ahead, we would then arrange an initial assessment session which is an opportunity to talk about things in more detail. I allow between 50 minutes and 1 and a half hours for this meeting so that we have ample time to talk about issues thoroughly.

At this meeting I will set out the practical aspects of beginning to work together in terms of breaks, fees, billing and cancellation policy etc.

Then regular meetings can be set up. These would typically begin once weekly (although if you wished can be more frequent). Sessions last for 50 minutes.

Please either phone or email in the first instance. If I am not available, it is helpful if you can leave a message stating when would be a good time to return your call. Do feel free to state if you would prefer me not to leave a message.I endeavour to return calls/messages on the same day.


           


                Being in Therapy


We will both commit to a process of working together even when things feel tough. (It is well-known that things often feel worse before they feel better in therapy.) Where appropriate, the therapy might be of short duration, but more usually psychotherapy is best approached as a long-term process involving considerable commitment for both parties. Dealing with issues that often build up over many years, it is perhaps unrealistic to think they can be dealt with hastily. That said, you are always free to end our arrangement. This is best done by face to face discussion so that we can arrange a suitable period for drawing therapy to a close depending upon how long we have been meeting.


 Bio - Dynamic  Psychotherapy

Is a process in which the Therapist and the client embark on a journey of self-exploration for the client. This often includes dealing with issues such as self-esteem, depression, anger and anger management, stress and stress management, and anxiety, to name just a few. The goal of Biodynamic Psychotherapy is to help the client explore their issues in a safe, confidential environment so as to better understand and overcome the difficulties they have raised. Ultimately, the aim would be for better understanding and acceptance in the client of themselves and their lives resulting in a better quality of life.


Bio - Dynamic Psychotherapy


Is different from ordinary psychotherapy or counselling. It works on mind and body to enable the spirit to unfold and build a bridge between the two. The blocking and repression of unpleasant thoughts, feelings and emotions takes energy, resulting in both physical and psychological tensions.

What Happens During a Bio -Dynamic Session?

In the beginning of the session there is plenty of space to talk and share. This will usually be followed by a bio-dynamic massage, breathing, bioenergetic or vocal exercises. 

Wilhelm Reich was one of the first psychoanalysts who started to treat mind and body together. He discovered that unexpressed emotion could settle down in the body as tension, create blockages and lead to disease and illness. While working on the blockages in the body we can release the emotions, free tension and cure disease.

Gerda Boysen, Norwegian psychotherapist and psychologist, as a pupil of Wilhelm Reich, discovered that body blockages could be dissolved with certain massage techniques which she called Biodynamic Massage.


     


Listen to your Body’s Sound


Placing a stethoscope on the abdomen, we can listen to the peristaltic sounds of the guts, an individual feedback of this process of releasing blockages. Memories and suppressed feelings from the past can come up to be remembered and expressed. The more blockages we dissolve, the more our energy can again move freely and give us prickling sensations of aliveness and joy to feel our body. We start to listen to our body's language, express ourselves creatively, breathe a little deeper and find our own inner balance in giving and taking.

 

One of the most important needs of a client coming to Biodynamic Psychotherapy is to find someone who can listen with genuine empathy and understanding. Listening therefore is central to all successful therapy. It is the skill of the therapist to listen in depth to the feelings and the experience of the client, as well as their beliefs, their body’s story, their dreams and their soul’s longing.

 

Part of  going to Biodynamic Psychotherapy is wanting to develop the awareness ( or Self-Knowledge) of how we function in the world, in relationships, emotions or with conflicting needs within oneself. Finding acceptance for the current difficulties often can be the first, but sometimes the  most difficult step to take. Even considering the possibility to reach out for professional support for oneself can be a tricky hurdle to overcome. There is usually a lack of self-worth or confidence that contributes to the struggle one experiences at this time.

 

By making the first appointment, the  first step is done to go on the path of improvement. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to receive the right kind of support with whatever their difficulty or burden is in life.

Psychotherapy generally would be a more holistic approach using different techniques to access and work with the deeper emotional and psychological issues. Approaches, such as gestalt and bio-dynamic, would incorporate the mind, body and spirit into the work.


        


               What is Bio -Dynamic Massage?


Biodynamic massage is a therapy that uses touch to facilitate both physical and emotional change. With its roots in body psychotherapy, Biodynamic massage is attuned to the emotional and psychological dimension of bodily experience.

While having the benefits of a traditional massage - relaxation, and the easing of tension and pain -Biodynamic massage is particularly suited to those interested in exploring the mind-body connection through touch, whether it be for insight into specific bodily issues, or as a means to self-discovery and change.

 

Biodynamic massage works sensitively and is respectful. The intention is always to meet the client in a way that supports and furthers self-healing.

Their are several forms of Biodynamic massage.  Some aim to soften the tightness in the muscles, in order to bring up feelings and more aliveness in the body. Some massages aim to help with integration and containment, when, perhaps, a person feels too sensitive or overwhelmed; other massages may help increase energetic awareness or encourage expansion and strengthening.


    


Psychotherapy vs. Councelling


What's the difference between a counselor and a psychotherapist?

This is a question for which there is no clearly defined answer. So I'll tell you what I believe most have traditionally seen as the difference. The differences are reflected in the range of problems that are treated.

 

Counseling is considered to be of a short term duration and more proactive in dealing with the effects of a problem. Let's say you're in an abusive relationship. A counselor might help you extricate yourself from the relationship and help you get set up in a better living situation. She might offer suggestions for support groups, or recommend agencies who deal with special housing needs or alternative funding sources for education.

 

A counselor also makes very specific recommendations based on the problem you are addressing. So a career counselor might recommend doing some information interviews. or an addictions counselor might help you identify specific tasks associated with a 12 step program.

Psychotherapy might also include the above elements but the pace of the therapeutic process is usually slower. In the example above, a therapist would help you to identify the pattern in your relationships and promote changes within you so you are at less risk for finding yourself in the same situation in the future. The root of the problem might stem from a poor sense of self worth but the effect of the problem is a bad relationship.

There is considerable overlap between the two professions. Some counselors do deep therapeutic work, and quite a few psychotherapists do short term work.

Similar to how I work in individual psychoanalysis, I work to treat the entire person - not just a symptom - so that real changes can happen.
